PRESS: Watchdog can create system to block bogus numbers

MOSCOW, Jan 25 (PRIME) -- The Russian communications service will develop a technology to make the use of bogus numbers, which helped fraudsters steal 45 billion rubles in 2021, impossible, business daily Kommersant reported on Tuesday.

According to the portal of state purchases, the watchdog’s General Radio Frequency Centre signed on December 29 an 8.2 million ruble contract to research of a technology to make the number replacement on the networks of the connection operators impossible.

The tender was held privately and no technical documents or information about the winner were disclosed.

A center representative told the daily that the research is needed to determine the principles of interaction between the connection operators. “During a call, they must exchange true subscriber numbers, excluding their replacement and ensuring compliance with the contract on provision of connection services of the calling subscriber,” the representative said.

In January–November 2021, the phone fraudsters stole about 45 billion rubles from Russians, according to the Interior Ministry.
